I suffer from nausea (bkilot in Hebrew בחילות) or vomiting (hakaot הֲקָאות): what should I do?
- Don't worry, nausea and vomiting are common and due to hormonal changes.
- They are increased in the presence of certain odors or during certain movements.
- Rest assured, they usually disappear after the third month of pregnancy.
Here are some recommendations to reduce nausea and vomiting:
- avoid having an empty stomach for too long;
- eat the foods you crave in small, frequent amounts until you feel better;
- drink between meals rather than during meals;
- if you are bothered by odors, choose less odorous cold foods;
- get some fresh air regularly;
- avoid cigarette smoke, strong odors and caffeine.
- Beware of vomiting during pregnancy: it weakens tooth enamel
Vomiting can weaken your tooth enamel due to stomach acid deposits on the teeth and thus promote tooth decay.
It is therefore recommended after vomiting to rinse your mouth with water or a bicarbonate or fluoride mouthwash, then to wait at least an hour before brushing your teeth because immediately after vomiting, the enamel is too weakened.
If, despite these recommendations, vomiting persists and interferes with your daily life, it is also possible to use drug treatment:
- Metoclopramide (Primperan in France, Pramin in Israel) widely used in France, is very little used in Israel because of its potential adverse effects.
- In Israel, doxylamine succinate (Diclectin or more recently Bonjesta) is mainly used, an expensive but effective treatment.
- Finally, if the vomiting completely prevents you from eating and is responsible for significant weight loss, it may be necessary to consult the hospital or the emergency room in order to take blood samples and treat any dehydration or disorders. fluids and electrolytes such as hypokalaemia.
- In general, nausea and vomiting cease spontaneously at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy.
- If they persist or return beyond the second trimester, it will be necessary to seek a cause other than pregnancy
