During the third trimester, you might experience heavy legs and sometimes restless sensations (unpleasant feelings such as tingling, numbness, prickling, or burning that can even feel like pain) in your legs. Your feet and ankles may swell, and small red, dilated blood vessels may form telangiectasias.
This is a common phenomenon among pregnant women, primarily caused by venous and lymphatic compression from the growing baby.
Tips for Heavy Legs
To promote healthy blood circulation, we recommend:
✅ Stay Active
- Walk for at least 20 minutes daily.
- Opt for stairs instead of elevators.
- Engage in sports like swimming (unless medically contraindicated).
- Perform cycling movements while lying on your back before bed. Follow with a leg massage for a few minutes, moving from your ankles toward your knees.
✅ Improve Blood Flow
- Keep your legs stretched out while sitting or lying down.
- Raise the foot of your bed by 10-15 cm.
- Avoid crossing your legs while seated.
- Take regular breaks to walk or perform foot flexing movements when sitting or standing for extended periods.
- Avoid applying heat to your legs if you have vein-related issues.
What to Avoid
- Hot baths (opt for cool showers for relief).
- Saunas or steam rooms.
- Waxing with hot wax.
- Sun exposure.
- Walking on hot surfaces (like heated floors).
Clothing and Footwear Choices Matter
To avoid restricting blood flow in the lower limbs:
- Wear loose-fitting clothing.
- Avoid high boots that compress your calves.
- Don’t wear knee-high socks with tight elastic bands.
- Steer clear of high-heeled shoes. Opt for comfortable footwear with heels no higher than 3 cm.
Hydration Is Essential
Do not reduce your fluid intake. Continue drinking water and other liquids like milk, fruit juices, or soups.
Consider Compression Stockings
Compression stockings or tights can be very beneficial, even though they may be uncomfortable during the hot Israeli summer. Your doctor or midwife may recommend wearing compression stockings throughout your pregnancy.
